Beef Packing Capacity Expansion

A recent visit by USDA leadership to Upper Iowa Beef’s Lime Springs facility highlighted how regional processors are navigating these dynamics while investing in expanded capacity and infrastructure to serve producers and local economies.

While projects under way in states like Missouri, Nebraska and Texas could add thousands of head of daily packing capacity, smaller plants are feeling the pressure of a reduced cow herd and rising competition for cattle. Analysts point out that herd numbers have fallen to historic lows, creating challenges for packers and ranchers alike and setting the stage for strategic decisions about quality, sustainability and long term survival in the industry.
